How Probe Microscopists Became Nanotechnologists

چکیده

Nanoscale entities are by definition invisible to the unmediated senses. Yet generating images of these objects has been crucial to the rhetoric of nanotech boosters. Thus, bringing microscopes and microscopists under the nano umbrella has been central to the work of nano proponents. No instruments have been more crucial to this process than the scanning tunneling microscope (STM) and atomic force microscope (AFM). Yet STM and AFM have long histories that precede the advent of nano. I outline this history and show that the connection between probe microscopy and nano is contingent rather than self-evident. The drafting of the probe microscopy community into nano was inspired by role differentiation within that community following the widespread commercialization of the instruments in the early 1990s. As probe microscopists move into nano, it is likely they will remake the field in light of the history of their community.

Nature's Nanotechnologists: Unveiling the Secrets of Diatoms

Diatoms, unicellular algae with ornate silica shells, have fascinated amateur and professional biologists ever since the invention of the microscope. But these days, diatoms and their exquisite shells are also attracting the attention of nanotechnologists who hope that diatoms will teach them how to make minute structures currently beyond the capabilities of materials scientists. And now these ...

Freshwater Diatoms from Deepor Beel - A Ramsar Site of Assam, India Revealed Potential Photoluminescence Properties for Nanotechnological Applications

Diatoms are unicellular, eukaryotic, photosynthetic algae belong to Bacillariophyceae, found in both fresh and marine water. They are found in a wide variety of habitats, responsible for up to 25% of the world’s net primary productivity [1]. Diatom is the only organism having genetic ability to mineralize natural silica and to deposit over the frustule in nanoporous sizes. After understanding t...

Molecular Manufacturing: Nano Building Nano

The field of nanotechnology owes much of its popularity to molecular manufacturing (also called molecular nanotechnology or MNT), yet many nanotechnologists are only vaguely familiar with it. In general, nanotechnology involves creating or studying nanoscale structures–less than 100 nm in size. This includes a very broad range of fields, from computer chips to medical diagnostics. Making nanosc...

The evolution of surfaces and their measurement

Surfaces and their interactions are at the heart of living systems and all moving objects. They have fascinated man from the ancient Egyptians, through Leonardo Da Vinci in the Renaissance period, to nanotechnologists of today. This paper elucidates the science of surfaces and their interactions, covering the importance of surfaces and how they influence us all in terms of energy, environment a...

Assessment of aquatic environmental quality using gyrodactylus sp. as a living probe: parasitic biomonitoring of ecosystem health

Biological indicators are species that can be employed to monitor environmental quality and ecosystem health. Different groups of organisms such as plants, animals, bacteria and parasites regularly produce certain molecular signal in response to changes in their environmental milieu. Parasites are important tools for providing wealth of information on physicochemical quality, environmental stre...
